Updated on March 8, 2011

My second hub in the Hubchallenge...

Poverty and homelessness is now widespread and often ignored as it inflict a resounding blow to the system and exposes flaws in the mainstream of the society.

(Editor's note: This hub also provides answers to the question to: How to solve poverty and homelessnes  and How to eliminate poverty and homelessnes below.) Poverty and homelessness is crippling the underprivileged and unfortunate people in the "Third World" countries. The sights of smelly slums, beggars waiting for alms, pitiful disabled and elderly people, trash pickers doing there literal down to earth ways to earn a living, and mentally challenged people (victims of social pressures) patrolling every corners of the streets as if they don’t exists at all, are all widespread in most countries where progress seems out of reach, plagued with unending and stinging corruption and programs that could help yield employment were not properly implemented.

This predicament is indeed very alarming and bothering, as lives are lost each day because of hunger and its related effects. Many people that fall in the poverty line would morphed into hooligans, thieves, holduppers and the likes, that stirs a domino effect in the form of crimes.

Homeless children are plenty in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar, and what makes this problem wearisome is that these children are left out in the streets because their parents are lazy to look after them.

In Latin America, specifically in Brazil, poverty and homelessness is rampant in the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

About 2,300 homeless seek residence in the Park Station, Johannesburg, South Africa. An indication that poverty is also found in a wealthy nation, most of these homeless people have no sufficient water, toilet facilities and electricity.

In Poland there are about 300,000 to 500,000 homeless people.

There are more than 100 million homeless people across the planet and expect these to shoot up further because of the impact brought by the global recession that continues to wreak havoc on the different economies across the globe.

In a book published by UN titled Strategies to Combat Homelessness, defines homelessness as “Not having an acceptable level of housing provision. It would include all states below what may be regarded as adequate.”

Some of these people doesn’t have proper shelter and would seek sanctuary in abandoned buildings, under bridges, living like Nomads with carts as their mobile homes, will seek refuge in a man-made houses made from leftover materials like (old lumber, cartoons, plastic junks), train stations, park benches, stairwell or cellars.

Here are some pitfalls of the modern society in combatting poverty and homelessness.

Housing programs should be properly addressed in the form of not just ratifying them but to ensure full implementation of these endeavors. Corruption should be eradicated to prevent any substandard materials being utilized and smooth construction of these would be homes of our poor brothers and sisters will be realized.

Planning system should be concrete and progress of each should be regularly monitored when it is under the implementation and construction.

Each country should put importance in poverty alleviation program to help the poorest of the poor. Distribution of nation’s wealth should be felt even by those people who are affected with poverty.

Homelessness is the effect of each nation’s policies that were not properly given solution that created chain reaction that spur social problems like those related to crimes.

Youths especially those that are affected by poverty should be given government support. This is one of the most effective ways to help curb the sharp increase of homeless people, and eradicate the decays and plagues of poverty and its ill-effects. Each nation must be generous enough to give chance to these children and instead of branding them as problems; they should be treated as potential assets and stalwarts in helping bolster each nation’s economies.
