Power to Change Campaign of HP

Hewlett Packard campaign drive unleashed to help in keeping our environment a better place to live in.

With just four months after launching a noble cause, "Power to Change," Hewlett Packard (HP) hatched attracted thousands of people support. The battlecry of the campaign is to let PC users turn off their PC monitors when not in use as well as employing ways to help in preserving the environment. Spreading like a forest fire, the campaign reach different parts of the world as registant contributed to energy savings by a whopping 74,000 kilowatt hours and 42 tons of carbon emissions, and these figures are growing as days passes by. This endeavor can be likened to putting halt to 2,815 cars from running in the road for one day.
HP's "Power to Change" campaign offers a downloadable application which tracks and records energy and carbon emission savings everytime a user turns off his monitors when not utilized.
The application encourages people to give their contribution in helping to keep our environment a healthy place to live in amid pollutions and problems concerning enviroment in the very planet we live in.
Reinforcing the "Power to Change," campaign is the Green IT for Dummies a guidebook that is also released by HP for free. The book is downloadable at http//wwww.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdesign/greenit4dummies.html. This book can readily be used at workplace, to help in the campaign towards green and sustainable usage of computers.

Here are some of the Green IT tips contained in the book that is helpful to our environment as well as to save energy and even money:

For PC Users
1. Switch off the screen saver. Enable your monitor to be on sleep mode if it is idle for more than 15 minutes.


2. The LCD ones are economical in the long run than CRT ones. Moreover, LCD monitors offers image quality and uses less energy. Switching to LCD monitors is indeed a smart move and practical.

3. Use soft copies of documents when possible to reduce the need for printing. Less reliance to hard copy of documents through the use of printing will also reduce significantly the demands for inks and paper.

4.Place your PC in a cool place to prevent it from working double time. The more heat your PC generates, the more power is dissipated, thus electrical energy is transformed to heat as precious energy is wasted. Equip your system case and processor with fan.


In Workplace
1. Have a low power device on your desktop not the PC processor box, allow the bulk of work to be processed in the data center.

2. Most server computers, uses a lot of electricity and works 30% of its capacity. Tap the help of virtualization software, to enable your processors work twice the amount of work, this will keep you reduce overall environmental impact and number of devices in use.

3. Use remote access to applications. Like computers at home to cut travel. Encourage staff to join in web conference and web seminars to lower air and road travel when necessary.
